Pick a cooling pillow for airflow first: open-cell or honeycomb cores, shredded or loose fills and breathable covers keep heat moving all night. Gel layers and "cool-touch" fabrics feel cold when you lie down but warm up as they absorb heat, so they help most at the start of the night. Pair the pillow with a breathable pillowcase, light bedding and a cool room.

If you flip your pillow looking for the cool side, the problem is usually heat building up under your head. Solid, dense materials — especially traditional memory foam — trap that heat because air can't move through them. A cooling pillow tries to fix this in one of two ways: by moving heat away (airflow and breathable materials) or by absorbing heat for a while (gel, phase-change and cool-touch fabrics). Knowing which one you're buying sets the right expectations.

How cooling pillows work

Approach What it does How long it helps
Honeycomb / grid cores (TPE, latex pinholes) Open channels let air circulate under your head All night — heat keeps escaping
Shredded foam, fiber or buckwheat fill Loose fill leaves air gaps; you can often remove fill to adjust height All night; buckwheat is the most breathable
Gel-infused or gel-layer memory foam Gel absorbs heat and feels cool on contact Mostly the first part of the night, until the gel warms
Cool-touch or phase-change covers Fabric pulls heat away from the skin when you lie down Short-term; best combined with airflow
Cooling pillowcases Smooth, lightweight fabric that feels cool and dries quickly Helps any pillow; easy to wash and swap

The most comfortable setups usually combine both: a breathable core for all-night airflow plus a cool-touch surface for that first-minute relief.

Choose by sleep position, then by cooling

A cooling pillow still has to hold your head at the right height, or you'll trade overheating for a stiff neck.

  • Side sleepers need a taller, firmer pillow (roughly 10–15 cm / 4–6 in). A gel-and-foam contour or a grid pillow with two heights works well. See our side-sleeper height guide.
  • Back sleepers need a medium height with a head cradle; contour gel pillows suit many.
  • Stomach sleepers need something thin and soft — a low shredded-fill pillow or just a cooling pillowcase on a flat pillow.

The rest of the bed matters as much

  1. Room temperature. Sleep organizations commonly suggest a cool bedroom, around 16–19°C (60–67°F), for most adults.
  2. Pillowcase. Smooth, breathable fabrics feel cooler than brushed or flannel cases. A silk or satin pillowcase also reduces friction.
  3. Sheets and duvet. Lightweight, breathable sheets and a lighter duvet stop heat from building up around you.
  4. Airflow. A fan or open window moves the warm air away from your face.
  5. Evening habits. A warm shower an hour or two before bed, then a cool room, helps many people fall asleep more comfortably.
Night sweats? Frequent drenching night sweats — especially with fever, weight loss or other new symptoms — are worth mentioning to a doctor. Cooling bedding can make you more comfortable, but it isn't a fix for an underlying cause.

Care tips for cooling pillows

  • Wash covers and pillowcases regularly; body oils reduce how breathable fabrics feel.
  • Never put gel or memory-foam cores in the dryer unless the label allows it.
  • TPE grid cores can usually be rinsed; let them dry fully.
  • Replace pillows that have lost shape — flattened foam traps more heat.

Maswali yanayoulizwa mara kwa mara

Do cooling pillows really work?

They help, within limits. Pillows that improve airflow (honeycomb cores, loose fills, breathable covers) tend to stay comfortable longest. Gel and cool-touch fabrics feel cold when you first lie down but warm up over time.

What is the coolest pillow material?

Materials that let air move — buckwheat hulls, latex with pinholes, shredded fills and open grid cores — generally sleep cooler than solid memory foam.

Why does my memory foam pillow get hot?

Solid memory foam is dense and responds to body heat, so warmth builds up under your head. Gel layers, ventilation holes or a shredded-foam design reduce this.

Is a cooling pillowcase enough?

For mild overheating, a smooth breathable pillowcase can be enough. If you still wake up hot, pair it with a more breathable pillow core.

How cool should my bedroom be for sleep?

Many sleep organizations suggest roughly 16–19°C (60–67°F) for most adults, adjusted for your bedding and what feels comfortable.
